Welcome to Sri Lanka
Welcome to Sri Lanka! Your personal driver will pick you up at the airport in Negombo and take you to your hotel close by. After your check-in you can relax and shake off any long distance travel stress. Tomorrow, your real adventure will start!
Fishmarket in Negombo
Sri Lanka is known as the pearl of the Indian Ocean and is known for its famous seafood. Therefore your journey begins with a visit of the local fish market in Negombo. If you manage to get up early, you can watch the fishermen take the fish out of the boats and prepare the stands for customers and visitors of the market. After the market you will return to the hotel and get ready for a three to four hour drive to the Cultural Triangle.
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Once you've arrived at the Cultural Triangle, the day will start with a delicious breakfast at your hotel. Afterwards your first adventure will be the exploration of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Sigiriya or Sinhagiri is an ancient rock fortress located in the northern Matale District near the town of Dambulla. This place was selected by King Kasyapa for his plan to build his capital of choice. After the king's death the palace was used as a monastery. You will then continue your journey to either Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park depending on recent elephant sightings. In the evening you will return to your hotel to get rest.
The Medieval Capital of Ceylon
Good morning! We will start the day early with a safari which will take you around Minneriya National Park. Shortly afterwards the journey continues the famous city of Polonnaruwa that is known as the medieval capital of Ceylon. Take a stroll through the ancient ruins of the city that is filled with well maintained palaces, treasures, temples, and meeting halls. On top of all the gorgeous treasures you will find the ancient sculpture of Lord Buddha that was built in the middle of the 12th century. It is absolutely breathtaking!
Spectacular Dambulla Cave
The day begins with a lovely breakfast at your hotel. After you have gained some energy we will take you to Dambulla cave, the world recognized heritage that was carved by king Valagambahu back in the first century BC. A gilded 14-meter-long carving of Buddha can be found there. You shall then continue your travels to the small but world known city of Kandy high up in the mountains. Kandy is the heart and sole of the handicraft of woodcarving in Sri Lanka. There is just about everything you can imagine when you think of a wide range of handicraft items. The night will be spent at a hotel in Kandy. Make sure that you take a walk around the big lake by night. It is stunning!
Free Day in Kandy
Your second day in Kandy is filled with free-time. Why don't you explore the lush and green botanical garden of the city or visit the numerous shops on Kandy high street. Fill your heart with the atmosphere of this city in the hills and take some of the souvenirs home with you. If you are interested in seeing a temple in Kandy, do not miss the Temple of the Tooth Relic which is believed to have the tooth of Buddha. In the evening you will be able to join the Puja with hundreds of pilgrims passing by the beautifully lightened temple
Tea Mountain Trip
Finally it is time to take the train from Kandy into the Tea Mountains that are situated in Hatton. You will be welcomed by your driver at the railway station and driven high up into the hills on 4000 feet altitude to reach your accommodation. You spend the next couple of days here with the beautiful view of nature right in front of your porch. This adventure trip into the mountains will fill your suitcase of souvenirs in a whole different way.
Sri Lanka Tea Production
Today you will be introduced to the secrets of exquisite Sri Lankan Ceylon Tea. To discover tea culture combined with production, you will visit a tea estate with a guide who will explain you the process of making tea. On the way to the factory, you can see Tamil women who will be working among the green tea leaves plucking the plants. Soon you will be convinced: Sri Lanka tea is best!
The City of Colombo
Nature waves goodbye and the city of Colombo awaits you. Welcome to Colombo, the modern capital city of Sri Lanka with an ancient touch. This city is well shaped by Sri Lanka's colonizers, the Portuguese, Dutch, and British. Soon you will see the reflection of the colonization in architecture, people’s attitudes, clothing, and food. Colonial heritage is everywhere! After a city tour you can have a rest at your hotel and afterwards take an evening walk through town.
