It was also used as a cool place of retreat, and as a water source and reservoir during dry times of the year. Chand Baori remains one of India's deepest and largest stepwells.
The baori consists of three flights of stairs that descend into the earth with a subterranean palace on one side. After visiting Abhaneri, the drive continues to Agra, where you can relax for the rest of the day.
Marvel at the Taj Mahal
Today you will make an early visit to the architectural wonder that is the Taj Mahal - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dating from the 17th century, the Taj Mahal is often called a poem in stone. Erected as a monument to love, the palace was built by the Mughul Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.
It took 22 years to be completed. Apart from its stunning design and perfect symmetry, the Taj is also noted for its elegant domes, intricately carved screens and some of the best inlay work ever seen. Afterward, return to the hotel for breakfast.
Later, visit Agra Fort, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Commissioned by Emperor Akbar, this elegant compound reflects an interesting synthesis of Hindu and Central Asian architectural styles. Later in the afternoon, explore Mehtab Bagh gardens and enjoy breathtaking views of the Taj Mahal from the opposite bank of the River Yamuna.

The holy city of Varanasi is located along the banks of the venerated River Ganges. The oldest living city in the world, thousands of scholars and sadhus (holy men) visit Varanasi every year to gain wisdom and debate the nature of the Godhead, while Hindu pilgrims gather to wash away their sins and conduct rituals of life and death. An awe-inspiring melting pot, the spiritual capital of India is also known for its beautiful silks, perfumes, and sculptures.
