Bienvenido a Nicaragua!
You will arrive in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. Home to almost two million inhabitants, it is the largest city in Nicaragua.
You will be warmly welcomed at the airport and brought to your hotel in this eclectic center of the country. The city has a lot to offer for its visitors: theatres, restaurants, authentic Nicaraguan street markets.
Natural reserves and beach destinations are also within an arm's reach. Within the city, you can enjoy the views of the Tiscapa Lagoon (of volcanic origin) where you can do a canopy tour. Another fantastic thing to do: visit the Montibell Bird and Butterfly Reserve. As you can see, many great things are awaiting you!
Next Stop: León
Did you realize that you are in Nicaragua yet? A delicious breakfast in your charming hotel will mark the start of another great day in the country of lakes and volcanoes. Today, you will visit the colonial city of León. In the afternoon, you will explore the city on a guided tour to learn about its rich history and culture.
León itself is a city with a very authentic atmosphere, in which visitors can easily connect with the locals. León offers a quiet, relaxed and pleasant atmosphere that comes to life at night owing to the city's large student population. The center with its colonial buildings, beautiful churches and the cathedral (UNESCO Cultural Heritage site) are only some of León's many attractions. You will enjoy it, for sure!
The Slide of Your Life - Volcano Sliding
This morning, you will experience a thrilling and at the same time very authentic adventure - climb one of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua and slide down its slopes.
This tour is not for the faint-hearted. Cerro Negro, the youngest volcano in whole Central America (formed 1850), is one of the most active ones as well (last eruption 1999). It is about 712 meters above sea level. Once you made it up to the top, making it through the steep and tough ascent, you will receive a short technical training from an experienced guide. Put on the protective equipment and get ready for the ride of your life!
San Jacinto Hot Springs & Matagalpa
In the morning, you will head to the northern side of Nicaragua. Your final destination on this day will be the city of Matagalpa, also known as "the pearl of the North". Matagalpa is a charming location with various hotels, restaurants, museums and other cultural centers. Also, it is the center of Nicaragua's coffee production!
On the way you visit San Jacinto hot springs. San Jacinto is a little town that is famous for its "fumaroles" (boiling mud holes), that are connected to the Telica volcano. Your guide will take you for a walk around the holes, which differ in size and colour. Local people in this area are keen to sell you their beautiful indigenous ceramics and handmade figures, made from the hot volcanic mud. Before the ride continues, visit a local family for a Tortilla Workshop!
Learn all about Coffee on a Organic Coffee Tour
How about getting an insight into the production process of good quality Nicaraguan coffee? This day will give you a completely new view on your morning drink.
First, you will begin with a walk through rows of plantillos (Spanish for coffee bushes) straight to the processing sheds and nurseries. From here you will receive information and be part of how the coffee is produced, from seed directly to a cup.
At the end, you will also learn about the social and economic factors of coffee production, the traditional roasting and tasting, as well as the history of coffee cultivation.
One of the Oldest Colonial Cities in Central America: Granada
Today, you will head to the city of Granada. Granada was founded in 1524 and is believed to be the second oldest city established in mainland Latin America by the Spanish conquest. It is characterized by bright-coloured Spanish-colonial architecture, visible throughout the city center. The ambiance is very pleasant and charming. Enjoy the wide array of popular restaurants and bars, especially along the the boulevard from the central park to the shores of Lake Nicaragua.
In the afternoon, you learn about the interesting city history and culture on a guided tour.
Hike at the Mombacho Volcano
Enjoy a strengthening breakfast - today will be active!
You will be driven to the top of the volcano (1150 metres) in a truck. After a quick and informative trip to the scientific station, you will explore this impressive volcano on a guided walk. The well-kept Crater Trail (1.5 km) leads you around the crater through a dense cloud forest. Enjoy spectacular views overlooking Granada, Las Isletas, Laguna de Apoyo and the Masaya Volcano.
After the crater trail, you head downwards the mountain to do a zip lining tour. The canopy tour consists of 11 zip lines and 17 platforms. Your expert instructor will accompany you and provide you high quality equipments for a safe adventure!
En route to Ometepe!
In the early morning, you will head to San Jorge Port to embark on the ferry to visit Ometepe Island (make sure to enjoy the stunning view along the way)!
The island of Ometepe is situated in one of the world's largest fresh water lakes, Lake Nicaragua. Ometepe has served as home to indigenous tribes and cultures for many centuries, of which the many pre-Columbian petroglyphs are silent witnesses.
The two volcanoes on the island, Concepción and Maderas, offer stunning views when approaching Ometepe by boat from the mainland. Both volcanoes have their own climate and unique vegetation. Hiking either of them is a great way to enjoy spectacular views of the surroundings.
Relax & Enjoy Ometepe Island
Today, you are free to choose your daily programme yourself. Enjoy the nature and wildlife of this breathtaking site.
Transfer To Apoyo Lagoon
Time to leave the beautiful island of Ometepe and head back to the mainland. But do not worry, the next stop will be magnificent!
You will head to Apoyo Lagoon, a lagoon located between Granada and Masaya. It was formed thousands of years ago, when a volcano exploded. Laguna de Apoyo is said to have the cleanest water of all fresh water lakes in Nicaragua. Laguna de Apoyo offers many activities to spend the day: relax in one of the hotels at the shore of the lake or take walks to see monkeys, hummingbirds, toucans and much more. The flora and fauna in this region is incredibly diverse!
Take a swim in the nice warm and clean water or paddle around it in a kayak. There are plenty of possibilities to go hiking, scuba diving and paragliding as well. This place is truly gorgeous!
Enjoy Apoyo Lagoon
Another day for you to choose your desired activities. Laguna de Apoyo has so many things to offer. Enjoy!
A beautiful 12-days adventure with so many new pictures, memories, experiences gained has to end, unfortunately.
