Explore the Sacred City of Anuradhapura
In the morning you will head out for Anuradhapura via Chilaw. You will take a sightseeing tour of the Sacred City of Anuradhapura, the oldest ancient capital of Sri Lanka (4th century BC to 11th century). It is one of the largest archaeological sites in the world, and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
Though time has taken its toll on these magnificent structures, what remains today clearly shows the intricate planning, elaborate constructions and the ornamentation at that time.
Anuradhapura is also home to the Bodhi tree (a sapling of the tree under which the lord Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment), one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred monuments. It is known to be the oldest historical tree in the world. After your exciting day, retire to your hotel.
Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Today you will climb the exciting Sigiriya Rock Fortress (Lion’s Rock), one of the most extraordinary artistic complexes of its time (477 – 498 AD). Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, this magnificent citadel allures artistic and architectural curiosity from around the globe.
Discover Rock Caves and the City of Kandy
Wake up and head for the Dambulla Rock Cave Temple. Also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
Dating back to the 3rd Century BC, this is the most impressive cave complex in Sri Lanka. It's a large five-cave complex, with extraordinary paintings and 157 statues.
From there, you will leave for Kandy. The city's name is derived from the word “Kanda,” meaning “the Mountain”. Kandy was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
The style and character of the Sri Lankan civilization at the time is well demonstrated in the heart of the city itself, with its lake, temples (including the Temple of the Tooth Relic), and well-preserved ruins of the royal palaces.
In the evening, you can visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic, a significant Buddhist site containing a tooth of Buddha collected from his funeral pyre.
Relax in the Beautiful Peradeniya Botanical Gardens
In the morning, you will enjoy a relaxing visit to the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens.
They are the largest and finest gardens in Sri Lanka, covering almost 150 acres and filled with an amazing variety of local and foreign tree and plant species.
The history of the site dates back to the fourteenth century, when Wickramabahu III established a royal residence here.
Retire to your hotel for the evening.
Train Ride to the Hill Country

You can travel this distance either by vehicle or train. Please keep in mind that the Hill Country has a cooler climate (average 16°C). A train journey is truly a rare experience and is an adventure itself!
