Learn About the Batwa People

We all meet for breakfast before embarking on a tour of the Batwa Pygmy tribe. This tour involves quite a bit of walking.

The Batwa People – the original people of the rainforest - are pygmies who were the first inhabitants of the mountain rainforests of Uganda, Rwandaand Burundi.

They have been living, gathering and hunting in the rainforest for over 500,000 years. Their lifestyle is a sustainable one that does not harm the forest, and their shelters do not disturb the environment.

Uganda is helping these indigenous people to keep their culture and traditions alive following there eviction from the forest over two decades ago.

During the conflict between the Bantu and the Bwata, they Bwata retreated deep into the forest to a cave called the Garama Cave measuring 342 meters long. Your guide will explain how they lived and fought from this cave.
