Welcome To Lima, Peru!
Welcome to Peru! Upon arrival at Lima’s International Airport, you'll be transferred to your hotel in Miraflores, where you can relax or explore!
Depending on your time of arrival, you'll be regaled with plenty of suggestions for making the most of your first day in Lima!
Explore Lima's Highlights, Flight To Arequipa
This morning we pick you up from your hotel at 8:30 am and depart on a tour that will take us back in time through the Colonial and Pre-Hispanic stages of Peruvian History. Our first stop we’ll be at the Larco Museum. The collection exhibited at Larco features the finest gold, silver and ceramics collection from Ancient Peru and offers the perfect introduction to Peru's millenary history. After, we head to Lima’s City Center to have a look at its imposing architecture.
Here we will visit the 16th Century Santo Domingo Convent and have a look at Lima’s main square. We will have some free time for lunch and at the coordinated time, we will head to the airport to board your flight to Arequipa (not included). Upon arrival, reception, and transfer to your hotel.
Explore The Colonial Highlights Of Arequipa
Today will be free to explore on your own. One of the main advantages of this beautiful city is that everything is close to its colonial city center which means you can easily explore its main sites at your own pace. Most of the attractions have on-site guides so it's not necessary to take a private guided tour today. We'll give you some maps and useful information so you can make the most of your first day in Arequipa.
Note: We highly recommend visiting Santa Catalina Monastery one of the most fascinating colonial and religious buildings in Peru, exploring the beautiful neoclassical cathedral of Arequipa and don't miss the chance to visit the interesting museum of the Andean Sanctuaries.
Reaching The Colca Canyon
Today you'll start your day early to view the Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu volcanoes, as well as, the pre-Inca farming terraces that are still used to this day.
You’ll also stop at Pampa Cañahuas, a natural reserve home to iconic Andean wildlife, such as vicuñas, llamas, alpacas, deer, wild rabbits, foxes and diverse bird species.
You’ll also stop at the Patapampa, the highest viewpoint on the route, where you’ll have a chance to have a look at Ampato and Sanbancaya, two snowcapped volcanoes.
Finally, we’ll enter the Colca Canyon and valley itself through its main village, Chivay. Upon request, you can enjoy a delicious lunch in this area or visit the local hot springs to relax for a while. Alternatively, you can go to your hotel, located in what is probably the most privileged spot in the Canyon to relax and just take in the atmosphere.
Discover Cruz Del Cóndor And Arrival In Puno
After an very early breakfast at your hotel, you'll go to the “Cruz Del Cóndor”, a vantage point that allows you to get a real idea of the imposing magnitude of Colca Canyon!
Afterwards, we’ll begin our journey back to Chivay, passing through the picturesque towns of Pinchollo, Maca and Achoma, pre-Incan terraces and astonishing vistas of the canyon.
We’ll arrive to Chivay a little after midday for a delicious lunch. Finally, you'll head to the Andean high plains towards Puno and Lake Titicaca. For this part of the journey, you’ll take a comfortable tourist bus to Puno. You'll arrive to Puno in the late afternoon, close to the early evening.
A Day At Lake Ticaca
Today you'll have a full day in Lake Titicaca's lively communities to enjoy its beautiful landscapes!
You'll get picked up from your hotel in the morning to explore the floating reed islands of Uros, located out of Puno Bay in Lake Titicaca. Upon arrival, you’ll disembark on these bizarre artificial islands and spend some time to learn about the Uros Community.
Next, you'll head to Taquile, a Mediterranean-like island where you'll spend time relaxing and exploring. You'll also be able to observe how the traditions of Taquileans have been kept alive for centuries. Some traditions, include their colorful clothing, unique knitted and woven textile handicrafts.
Soon after, you'll have the option to enjoy lunch at a nice restaurant overlooking the blue Titicaca Lake, followed by a walk down a set of stone stairs that will take us to the dock where you'll board a boat back to Puno.
Sillustani Tombs, Tambo Queque Norte, and Cusco
Today you’ll visit Cusco, the old capital of the Inca Empire.
First, you'll depart Puno, taking a short detour to the Sillustani Tombs in Lake Umayo. Sillustani is an amazing burial site made up by huge cylindrical tombs called "Chulpas".
Afterward, you’ll continue crossing the high plains towards Tambo Queque Norte, an Andean country manor with history that goes back to Colonial times.
At Queque Norte, you’ll be able to relax a little while the friendly hosts gives us a brief tour and treat us to a delicious lunch based on locally farmed products.
After this tasty and filling experience, we can have a siesta or enjoy the scenery as we continue our journey to our next destination, Cusco.
Visit The Sacred Valley's Of The Incas
You'll begin the day exploring some of the most peculiar Inca sites located in the nearby Sacred Valley.
First, Moray, one of the most unusual Inca sites consisting of circular terraces built upon a natural depression, which seem to have been an agricultural experimental station used to adapt crops to different temperatures.
Next, Maras, an impressive salt-extraction complex consisting of thousands of small terraces. During the dry season, they fill the pans every 3 days with salty water that comes from a natural spring, once the water is evaporated, they collect the salt and sell at the markets of the region.
Finally, you’ll reach your hotel in the cozy village of Ollantaytambo - where you'll have the rest of the day on your own to relax or explore the narrow cobbled stone streets of this old Inca village.
Discover Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu
First, in the early morning to beat the big crowds, you'll walk from your hotel to the Ollantaytambo Archaeological Site, one of the best examples of Inca architecture you can witness nowadays.
Afterward, you’ll board the train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Town). The train journey is a spectacle where you can see the changing landscapes from green fields and eucalyptus forests to lush jungles!
Upon arriving to Aguas Calientes, you'll head to the nearby bus station to take a bus to Machu Picchu Citadel, located on an impressive mountain setting.
Next, you'll experience a 2-3 hour guided excursion in which you'll explore the famous citadel, followed by a visit to Machu Picchu in the late afternoon. Afterwards, you'll take a bus back to Aguas Calientes where you can relax and maybe have a snack before returning to Ollantaytambo for the night.
Relax And Explore In The City Of Cusco
After a long but fun day in Machu Picchu the day before, you can sleep in and have a late breakfast. Afterward, you'll head to Cusco, the old Inca Capital and the final destination of our trip, which takes roughly about 2 hours.
Cusco is one of the most interesting cities in Peru and South America! You'll have most of today to explore the streets, plazas and markets of this UNESCO World Heritage City at your own pace. Just as in Arequipa, you'll be provided with maps and plenty of local tips that will allow you to make the most of today!
From The Andes To The Amazon Basin
You'll start the morning departing to the local airport to board our flight to Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to Peru’s Southern Amazon and the Tambopata National Reserve!
Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed by our local guide, drop off your excess luggage, register and do some last minute shopping. After, you'll head to the port in the Infierno Community, where you'll take a boat trip up Tambopata River to your lodge.
Once at the lodge, you'll be shown the facilities and briefed on the do and don’ts in the rainforest. In the afternoon, follow along for a short walk to observe some local flora, such as, Ironwood or Kapok tree and birds such as Trogons, quails and wild turkeys!
After breakfast, we can prepare ourselves to choose between 23 excursions that Refugio Amazonas offers. These activities range from soft-adventure, family, research and cultural experiences. We can do 3 or 4 excursions per day, depending on which activities you choose. This program is a perfect way to enjoy with family and decide in-situ which activities to do according to your interests and physical conditions.
After breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to our Amazonian friends. This morning, we board our boats to return to Puerto Maldonado where we’ll pass by our office to collect any baggage we might have left and then continue to the local airport to board our flight to Lima and connecting flights back home.
