Bienvenido a Nicaragua!
Welcome to Managua, the capital of Nicaragua! Upon arrival at the airport, your guide will pick you up from the terminal and transfer you to your hotel. Take some time to relax, maybe take a nap in the courtyard under a palm tree, or swim a few rounds in the pool. Later, if you feel like exploring, head out on foot to discover the city center of Managua. The city is a bustling metropolis of over 2 million inhabitants and the perfect place to get a first glimpse at the rich culture of Nicaragua.
Explore the Ruin City of Leon Viejo
Today you travel to the colonial city of Leon. The city used to be Nicaragua's capital and still boasts a tremendous cultural and historical wealth. Many beautiful colonial buildings can be found in the center of the town. A large student population adds to the charm and lets the city come to life at night. En route to Leon, stop at Leon Viejo. The city was founded here in 1524 but was relocated to the current location less than 100 years later. Frequent volcanic eruptions had made it impossible to maintain a settlement here. The ruins of "Old Leon" got buried under the ashes over centuries and were only unearthed again in the 1960s. Today Leon Viejo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk among the ruins and explore partially restored buildings, such as the original church of the town. Spend the night in Leon.
Go Volcano-Boarding in Cerro Negro
Leave the hotel after breakfast for an exciting day full of activities. You get the chance to ride down the side of the youngest volcano in Central America. The volcano was formed in 1850 and its last eruption dates back to 1999. Upon arrival at the foot of the volcano, your guide will provide you with a board and explain how to use it. Then it's time to hike up the volcano. The ascent is steep, but you make frequent stops and your guide will point out exciting details, such as lava fields and craters. On the top of the volcano, get your board ready and start heading down, all the way to the foot of the mountain!
Return to your hotel after this exhilarating experience for a relaxed afternoon. There is no itinerary in the evening, maybe take a walk through the charming old town of Leon, or have dinner in one of the excellent restaurants around?
Peek into an Active Volcano
Start the day with a delicious breakfast. Then it's time to leave Leon behind and head towards Apoyo lagoon, a volcanic lagoon, and natural reserve. Along the way, stop at Masaya volcano. Your guide takes you all the way to the top of the active volcano, from where you can peek inside the crater and see the smoke and - if you're lucky - lava bubbling below. Make another pit stop at the Masaya artisan market, where you can purchase a large variety of original Nicaraguan handicrafts. Move on to Apoyo lagoon. The water here is warm and nice for a swim, the lagoon is credited to be the cleanest freshwater lake in the country.
Take the Day Off at Laguna de Apoyo
Enjoy a free day without itinerary at the lagoon. Your hotel is located directly on the lake shore. Rent a kayak and go for a ride on the lake. Or how about a swim in the nicely temperate waters? If you feel like relaxing, today is your day. Just sunbathe on the grassy shoreline or take a nap in the hammock.
Discover the Colonial Town of Granada
In the morning, your driver picks you up for the journey to Granada, one of the oldest Spanish settlements in Latin America. The city is known for its bright colonial architecture and its relaxed atmosphere. Go on a city tour, where you get to see the town's gorgeous historical center. But you don't only get to walk among the beautiful streets. Hop on a horse carriage and enjoy the ride around the old town.
In the afternoon, take a boat ride on the beautiful lake Nicaragua. The lake is dotted with hundreds of small islands. Enjoy the ride, while the boat captain points out the fascinating flora and fauna that can be found on the islands. Make a pit stop on one of the islands for a sunset drink, before returning to the city.
Zipline through the Tree Tops in Mombacho
Today you explore Mombacho volcano. Your guide picks you up from the hotel and drives you to the top of the volcano. Visit a research station here before taking a guided hike to explore this fascinating place. The easy hike leads you through dense cloud forest around the crater. The trail offers spectacular views of the city of Granada, the Laguna de Apoyo, and other places in the surrounding area. The forest is also home to an abundance of wildlife, including howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, sloths, and the endemic Mombacho salamander that can only be found here.
After the hike, descend the mountain and depart on a zip-lining tour through the forest. Fly through the canopies of the trees and enjoy a unique perspective of the jungle.
Enjoy a Free Day in Granada
Take the day off from traveling and explore Granada at your own pace. Take a walk through the picturesque historic center and maybe eat at one of the many excellent restaurants around town. Or maybe you are looking for a few nice souvenirs to bring back home? You can find them in town as well.
Visit Ometepe Island
Wake up early today to take the ferry to Ometepe island, one of the many islands on lake Nicaragua. Ometepe is home to two volcanoes, as well as a nature reserve. In pre-Columbian times, the island had been home to indigenous tribes for centuries, and many petroglyphs are left to tell their story.
Upon arrival on the island, you are taken to the Chaco Verde nature reserve, an area located between the island's two volcanoes. A lagoon is located in the center of the reserve and it is home to many species of birds, as well as howler monkeys and other wildlife. Spend the night in your hotel in the reserve.
Learn about Coffee on Ometepe
Spend today exploring more of Ometepe island. Your guide takes you on a nature tour, starting at Peña Inculta, a natural reserve that is home to howler and white-faced monkeys. Then move on to visit the historical coffee hacienda Finca Magdalena, where you learn about the process of organic coffee cultivation. Take a short hike to visit rock carvings that have been created by indigenous tribes that have lived here in pre-Columbian times. Enjoy lunch at Ojo de Agua, a natural freshwater pool, before heading back and spending a relaxed afternoon at your hotel.
Travel back to Managua
In the morning, board the ferry to return to the mainland. From here, your driver will pick you up and drive back to Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua. Spend the last night in Managua, where you can enjoy the vibe of the city or another delicious meal of traditional Nicaraguan cuisine.
