Arrival In Cancun
Welcome to Yucatan! You will arrive in Cancún, a Mexican city on the Yucatán Peninsula bordering the Caribbean Sea. It is known for its beaches, numerous resorts and nightlife.
Upon arrival at the airport, you will collect your rental car and drive to your hotel. You will have the rest of the day at your own leisure. You can rest at the hotel or explore Cancun on your own and get some first impressions.
Exploring The Ruins Of Ek Balam
After breakfast, you will head to Ek Balam. This site remains the major discovery in Mayan archeology of the end of the twentieth century. You will get to climb the steps of the Pyramids and enjoy a breathtaking view of the surrounding jungle!
After lunch you will go on a bike tour to X’Canche Cenote. Go for a swim in this sacred place where you can also go on a zip-line or do some rappelling. If luck is on your side, you might get a glimpse of the famous Mayan bird «Toh » and its iridescent colors.
Afterwards you will drive to Valladolid, a small and authentic Mexican town that is lovely to stroll around. This peaceful town, built in the sixteenth century by Francisco de Montejo, is dominated by the imposing sobriety of the Franciscan convent San Bernardino de Siena. In the evening, you will appreciate the pretty pastel colored houses, while eating an ice cream!
Visiting The Magnificent Chichen Itza
After breakfast, you will head to Chichen Itza. Built by the Maya, and then reorganized by the Toltecs, Chichen Itza symbolizes the unification of both religious cultures. The site, which at its height was the most important religious center of the peninsula, is the largest archaeological site in Yucatan.
Afterwards, you will travel to Merida, the capital city of Yucatan. While enjoying economic growth, Merida kept a captivating colonial charm and a strong personality. You will find many well set off historical monuments, and pleasant little squares are a great setting to have a drink while listening to a marimba-playing band. Upon arrival in Merida, you will be transferred to your hotel for rest.
A Refreshing Cenote Experience
Today you will visit and explore two cenotes. Cenotes are natural pools of fresh and crystalline water, where the sun rays create spectacular lighting effects. On the way, you will cross a typical Mayan market where the colors of fruits and vegetables are matched only by those of the women’s traditional clothing. Then take a refreshing swim in the forest. One thing is certain, you will leave completely transformed!
Conquer The City Of Uxmal
After breakfast you will drive to the city of Uxmal. The site is peaceful and not widely visited by tourists. You will definitely be charmed by it!
Uxmal, in the Mayan language, means “Thrice Built”, but in reality, the city was constructed five times. The water is really scarce in the region which explains the omnipresence of representations of the rain god Chac-Mool. Take pictures of this magnificent beauty and share it with your friends back home!
Why don't you observe the famous sound and light show in Uxmal in the evening? It is quite an attraction!
The Haciendas And Yucatan’s Green Gold
In the morning you will depart for the Loltun Caves. Those are natural reservoirs considered sacred by the ancient Maya and which served as an ancient cult place. Archeologists have found many rock paintings, offerings and cult objects in this maze of stalactites and stalagmites.
Afterwards you will head to the hacienda Sotuta de Peon. A true living museum, Sotuta de Peon is the last Mexican hacienda where henequen is still produced. Its production made Merida a grand and rich town. It was called Yucatan’s green gold! You will then visit the fields on a small trolley pulled by a horse. After that you will go swimming in a cenote on the property of the Hacienda.
Afterwards you will head to the gorgeous colonial town of Izamal which is entirely painted in yellow.
Discovering The Ruins Of Coba
After breakfast, you will visit one of the oldest cities of the Yucatan, the gorgeous colonial town of Izamal, entirely painted in bright yellow. The Franciscan convent San Antonio de Padua was built on top of a Mayan ceremonial center and is the continent’s largest cloister. Then, you will drive to Valladolid, a small and authentic Mexican town that is lovely to stroll around. Afterwards, you will head to Coba, one of the largest Mayan cities. Its ruins have remained essentially intact in the middle of the tropical jungle. The archaelogists brought to light a 42 meters high pyramid, a 9-storey high palace, a ball court and the most extended network of large chalk cobbled roads ever discovered. After that you will head to Tulum and arrive there late in the afternoon.
The Magnificent Cenote Sac Actun
This morning, you will discover the extraordinary Cenote Sac Actun. With over 150 km of underwater galleries, Sac Actun is the largest network of underground rivers in Mexico. The Maya considered it a gateway to the underworld. You will swim in a magical setting. This will undoubredly be one of the unforgettable moments in Yucatan! After that you will return to Tulum.
