Welcome to Cancun!
Land at the airport in Cancun! Your adventure through southern Mexico is ready to begin. You will be greeted at the airport by an English-speaking member of our team, who can help you get your vehicle and take care of everything you need. Then you will be heading straight to your hotel to recuperate from your flight. Spend the evening relaxing and order your favorite drink.
Enjoy Colorful Valladolid
It is your first full day in Mexico! Use the day however you wish as you make your way to your next stop in Chichen Itza. We highly recommend spending the afternoon in the town of Valladolid. Built in the 16th century by Francisco de Mentejo, the Franciscan convent San Bernadino de Siena is hard to miss. The town conveys a peaceful atmosphere as you stroll among the charming pastel-colored houses and enjoy an ice cream. Continue on to your hotel in Chichen Itza, where you will spend your evening.
Marvel at the Mayan Wonders
After a delicious breakfast in your hotel, head over to the area's main attraction: the spectacular Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza. Although the impressive pyramids were built by the Mayan, they were later used by the Toltecs as well, and today symbolize the unification of both cultures. Chichen Itza is the largest archeological site on the Yucatan, and was once the most important religious center of the region. Climb the steep steps of the great pyramid, and marvel at the ancient architecture. Afterward, move on to the gorgeous colonial town of Izamal, which is painted bright yellow. By the evening, arrive at Hacienda Ticum, located about 30 kilometers outside of Merida, where you will spend the night.
Swim in a Mexican Cenote
Today, travel to a true living museum, as you make your way towards Sotuta de Peon. This is the last hacienda where hanequen, or sisal, is produced. The fibers of this plant were once used for many things, such as ropes, baskets, and much more. The production of sisal made Merida wealthy, and the material was known as the Yucatan's green gold. Learn about how the plant is processed and visit the fields via a horse-drawn trolley. Finally, take a break from the hot sun and go swimming in a tropical cenote, an underground cave that is open to the sky and perfect for cooling down. Continue on to Merida, where you will spend the night.
Discover the Ruins of Uxmal
Wake up in the morning to an energizing breakfast. Then, depart for the archeological site of Uxmal. Built by the Mayans, the site is not often visited by tourists, and you can explore to your heart's desire without all of the crowds. Because rain is scarce in the region, be sure to keep an eye out for the many representations of the Mayan rain god, Chac-Mool, that can be seen as you explore the ruins. In the afternoon, head to the village of Becal, where you will learn about how panama hats are made, a typical Yucatan garment. Afterward, continue on to Campeche, where you will check into your hotel.
Come visit Chiapas!
Today, depart Campeche in the morning for the state of Chiapas, the southernmost state in Mexico that borders on Guatemala. On the way, stop in Sabancuy by the sea, where you can take a refreshing midday swim to cool down. After you've dried off, hop back in your car to continue your journey south. Make sure to take in the beautiful Mexican countryside while you drive. In the late afternoon, arrive in Palenque, where you can feel the tropical forest. Spend the rest of the evening relaxing in your hotel or exploring the town.
Explore Magical Palenque
After a delicious breakfast, head out to the archeological site of Palenque, maybe the most magical Mayan site in Mexico. Dive deep into this fantastically conserved city that spans almost 8 square miles. Discover the Mayan architecture, characterized by superb stucco bas-reliefs. At the heart of the Inscriptions Temple stands the crypt of King Pakal. It still contains the remains of the monarch, covered with jewels and a mortuary mask made of jade mosaic.
After exploring the ruins, return to the town center for a hearty lunch. Then, meet your guide for a 2-hour hike amidst gigantic trees in the "selva", the rain forest. Enjoy the impressive forest and get a chance to see howler monkeys and other wildlife. Return to your hotel for a good night's sleep.
See Wildlife Roam among Maya Ruins
Today you visit the archeological site of Calakmul, located at the heart of a biosphere reserve and home to numerous jaguars. This lesser known site used to to be the direct rival of the Tikal in modern-day Guatemala. Wildlife roams the ruins freely, prepare yourself to encounter toucans, monkeys, oco pheasants, and other animals. After this exciting adventure, check into your hotel in Calakmul, where you spend the night.
Explore more of Calakmul
After breakfast, you get another chance to explore the parts of the Calakmul ruins that you missed yesterday. Wander among the overgrown remains of this once-powerful city and enjoy the magical atmosphere. Then it's time to leave Calakmul behind and continue to Bacalar, where your adventure will continue tomorrow. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy the evening at leisure.
Go Swimming with Turtles
Today is a special day. Head out after breakfast to Akumal, where you get your snorkel gear on to swim with sea turtles. These amazing creatures come to a bay in this area to feed on the abundant sponges and breed on the beaches. See the animals as they majestically glide through the water, and maybe you even get to touch one. After this amazing adventure, continue the drive to Tulum, where you spend the night.
Spend the Day Relaxing on the Beach
Spend the day relaxing on the beach and enjoy the sun. Go for a swim or just sunbathe. Or how about an excursion to the archeological site of Tulum. Explore the site and the unforgettable turquoise Caribbean Sea in the background.
Have a Safe Journey Home
It's time to say goodbye to Mexico. Depart from the hotel with more than enough time to get to the airport and return your rental car. Have a safe flight home!
