Welcome to Iceland!
After landing at Keflavik airport you'll take a bus to the domestic airport and hop on a second flight to Akureyri.
In Akureyri, look out for the friendly face of your guide there to welcome you and assist you with your luggage. You'll then be transferred to your accommodation on the pristine Icelandic coastline.
The Northern Lights are often visible there, the perfect thing to welcome you. Once you've checked in and settled, why not hop in the jacuzzi and start the trip with a hot bath under the stars.
Today you’ll discover the region of Eyjafjordur.
Eyjafjordur means fjord of the island, because of the island of Hrisey (“the north pearl”) located right in its middle. This large fjord surrounded by mountains and hills is the perfect spot for nice starting this trip and feel the vibe of Icelandic powerful landscape.
Your guide will show you great spots in the forest and mountains nearby overlooking the fjord.
Once the tour is over, you'll return to the warmth and comfort of your accommodation where you can relax.
Dive into the Baths at Myvatn
Today, we'll drive to Myvatn and check in to your accommodation for the next 4 nights.
Lake Myvatn, is located on the mid-Atlantic ridge emerging in Iceland. This ridge, or rift, spreads out and pushes away the American and European plates, at the speed of 2cm a year. This is why volcanic activity is so active in this region, changing its morphology permanently.
Just 2 kms from your hotel you'll hike between the rocky formations of Dimmuborgir - the lava castles.
During the snowshoeing hike you'll make several stops to discover lava caves and try to spot some trolls…
In the afternoon, go to the Myvatn Baths for a relaxing time.
Climb Hverfell Crater
Have a hearty breakfast by the lake where you might be lucky enough to see some ducks enjoying the warmish waters before beginning your ascent of Hverfell crater.
For those who know Iceland during the summertime, with its chaos of black lava, winter is the opportunity to meet a new landscape, “uniformed” by the snow, from which only emerge the highest lava peaks and the main craters.
From atop the crater, enjoy a beautiful 360° panoramic view.
Then, we'll hike to the Grjotagja lava tunnel located on the rift. The place served as the shooting location of the Game of Thrones famous scene with Jon Snow.
Discover the Krafla Caldera
Today, head towards the Krafla Caldera to discover this unique site, which last eruption happened in 1984.
Go snowshoeing on a wonderful ground struggle between ice and fire. Hikes are done walking or snowshoeing, depending on the day and snow status. The air is very pure in this time of the year and the magnificent skies often show the famous Glitský (the mother-of-pearl clouds) and the northern lights. Frost shines on trees and makes the landscape looking like a wonderland.
At the end of the day, you'll enjoy another warm and soothing bath.
Walk in the Solfataras' Fields of Hverir
A visit to Myvatn is not complete without a walk in the solfataras’ fields of Hverir and a hike on the Namaskard Mountain.
Most often than not, we can spot a group of ptarmigans or an arctic fox. The nights of full moon often have a stronger light than the daylight because of the snow’s reflection, and can be the opportunity for unforgettable walks.
After this unique spot of fumaroles, boiling mud puddles and sulphur deposits, end the afternoon by going for a walk in the forest of Höfdi on the shores of the lake, where you'll be able to find some of the only trees existing in Myvatn.
Make Your Way to Akureyri
This morning, you'll depart your hotel and head for Akureyri while making a stop at the cascading and . powerful waterfall of Godafoss, the Gods’ waterfall, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country.
You can have lunch in Akureyri before boarding your 45 minute flight to Reykjavik where your private transfer will then transport you to your accommodation in the heart of the city.
Feel free to spend it at your own pace and leisure, enjoying everything that this quaint city has to offer. Take the time to hang out around the capital and enjoy its tranquil and charming streets.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end but we hope you have enjoyed your time exploring the very best that the island of Iceland has to offer. The rich natural beauty history and the people that make the country what it is.
We hope you have had a memorable trip and wish you pleasant onward travels!
