Chichicastenango - Panajachel  

Explore Chichicastenango Market

Today, travel to Chichicastenango to explore its famous market. 

The Kaqchikel Indians descend from surrounding villages twice a week to sell their wares here. The city is transformed into a real kaleidoscope of colors and smells. The women wear the traditional huipil representing the seasons of the Mayan calendar and in the center of the village, shamans purify the stairs of the church with incense and indulge in Mayan rituals. 

Afterwards, we’ll depart for Lake Atitlan, a true symbol of Guatemala. This beautiful lake is nestled between 3 volcanoes and at 1600 meters above sea level, the panoramas are magnificent. There are many small villages that sit on the shores of the lake, often only accessible by boat.

Santiago Atitlan - San Juan Laguna - Panajachel  

Immerse Yourself in a Tzutuhil Village

This morning, hop on a boat and discover a Tzutuhil village. 

The Tzutuhil natives are one of the 21 Mayan peoples of Guatemala and are present in only a handful of villages located southwest of Lake Atitlan. 

We’ll then discover the small Mayan village of San Juan la Laguna where the weavers' cooperative will open its doors to teach you about the techniques of natural coloring and traditional weaving. Appreciate the naive paintings that represent scenes of daily life in the region. We’ll then return to Panajachel where you can spend the rest of the evening at your own pace and leisure.

Dive into the Majesty of Antigua

Today, we’ll travel to the city of Antigua where you can spend the afternoon at your own pace and leisure.

Surrounded by 3 majestic volcanoes, the ancient capital of Central America has suffered many natural disasters throughout its history: earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions…but Antigua is now one of the most beautiful cities in Guatemala. 

We invite you to discover the city which is host to more than 30 monasteries and convents and a grand cathedral in the central square. The cobblestone streets adjoin the colorful patios of the colonial houses. Stroll along the arcades of Parque Central, admiring in the distance the volcanoes Fuego, Agua, and Acatenango.

Sit back and relax and take the atmosphere in.

Ascend to the Heights of Pacaya Volcano

With an early morning departure, we’ll head for Pacaya volcano, one of the 3 active volcanoes in Guatemala. 

We’ll begin the ascent which offers beautiful views of the valley and the volcanoes Agua, Fuego and Acatenango. Once at the base of the cone, we observe the crater and the fumaroles that escape from it. Lava flows can be seen when the volcano is active.

We’ll descend the giant and return to Antigua around 1pm with the rest of the afternoon free. 

After lunch, head for the department of Alta Verapaz whose mountainous landscapes are covered with mist, waterfalls and lush forests. 

Your arrival in Cobán, marks your arrival in the city which translated from Indian Quek'chi means "between the clouds."

Day 5

Candelaria - Flores  

Explore the Mayan Underworld in the Candelaria Caves

Today, head north of Alta Verapaz to explore the caves of Candelaria

The main gallery is nearly 22 kilometers long, plus 60 kilometers of additional networks, making up one of the largest underground networks in Latin America. Take an excursion of approximately 1.5 hours to discover a part of the network that the Mayas regarded as an entrance to the underworld of Xibalba. 

In the afternoon, continue to Flores in the heart of Petén where you can spend the rest of the day at your own pace and leisure.

Visit Tikal, the Jewel of the Mayan Worlds

Today is dedicated to the exploration of the impressive city of Tikal, built in the 4th century BC.

The city reached its peak between the 3rd and 9th century AD and now some 3,000 structures emerge from the rainforest in a mystical atmosphere. 

Enter the site in the dark in order to witness sunrise from the highest pyramid. Witness the light reveal, little by little, the other pyramids that surround you and listen to the howler monkeys from miles away. Watch as many colorful birds rise from the trees in the early morning sun.

Afterwards, travel to the border with Mexico at the Ceibo border post to continue your journey into the Mayan world!

In the afternoon, meet with your guide for a beautiful adventure in ‘La Selva.' Discover Mother Nature during a hike amidst gigantic trees and beautiful plants. Take a refreshing moment near the waterfall.

Explore the City of Palenque

In the morning, visit the archaeological site of Palenque - it might well be the most magical site of Mexico

The majesty and mystery of its ceremonial centers still echo the past. At the heart of the Inscriptions Temple stands the crypt of King Pakal, containing the remains of the powerful monarch, covered with jewels and a mortuary mask made of jade mosaic. 

The surrounding jungle and the buried ruins create an awe-inspiring scenery and it's easy to imagine the magnificence of the place, back when the temples and the palace stood in their full glory, adorned with richly animated esplanades, columns and ceilings. 

We’ll then depart for Chicanna a small town, deep in the state of Campeche.

Calakmul - Chicanna  

Immerse Yourself in the Biodiversity of Calakmul

Today, experience tropical nature and Mayan archeology at its best.

Visit the Calakmul archaeological site, one of the main cities of the Classic Mayan period, which over an area of 32 km2 and is home to more than 6000 buildings. The Ka'an dynasty that reigned in this city for over 1300 years became one of the most powerful, and is recorded in places as far away as Palenque and Copán in Honduras. 

In addition, this city, forgotten in time, is located within the largest tropical reserve in Mexico, which you can explore. The vegetation of the region and its magnificent state of preservation allows some of the highest population densities in the world to reside here, including the  white-lipped peccary, the ocellated Turkey, the temazate deer, and even the jaguar.

Day 9

Calakmul - Bacalar  

Safari Through the Calakmul Forests

This morning enter some trails in the jungle in search of animals. 

Visit places known for their high populations of wildlife. If there is an opportunity, our certified naturalist guides will help you with make a plaster of the footprints of some animals such as: tapirs, peccaries, deer, and even some cats: jaguar, puma, or ocelot. It is important to note that the animals are in their natural habitat so observing them during the trip can be extremely difficult, however our specialized guides will help you to track them more easily.

In the afternoon we’ll head to Laguna Bacalar, a 50 km long and 2km wide lagoon, surrounded by a beautiful mangrove forest. It earned the nickname ‘the lake of seven colors’ for its incredible water color variations.

Kayak Across the Water of Bacalar

Spend the day kayaking across the beautiful lagoon of Bacalar, relaxing in the tranquility and serenity of this calming place. 

Instructions and training will be given before the tour begins. After an of hour kayaking across the lagoon, enter the peaceful mangroves where many bird species can be spotted. If you are lucky you may see snakes, tapirs or even crocodiles. Travel through these canals for two hours before rejoining the lagoon. We’ll then take a break on a small beach where you will have time to swim. You might even need to pinch yourself to remind yourself that you’re not dreaming. 

Afterwards, return to Bacalar for a well deserved rest at the hotel.

Tulum - Akumal  

Bathe in the Serenity of Tulum

After breakfast, head up the coast and visit the archeological site of Tulum. 

This UNESCO World Heritage Site sits on a cliff edge facing the Caribbean sea and witnessed the arrival of the first Spanish Conquistadors. Visit this ancient harbor (and the only one known) built in 1200 and which disappeared at the end of the sixteenth century.

Then, head to Akumal, a small town between Tulum and Playa del Carmen. In the Mayan language, Akumal means "land of the turtles." Here you will do some snorkeling to watch the numerous turtles that come, eat the abundant sponges in the bay, and lay their eggs on this pretty beach all year long. 

We’ll then return to Tulum at the end of the afternoon and you can spend the rest of the evening exploring the area at your own pace and leisure.

Sian Ka'an - Tulum  

Ride through Paradise in Sian Ka’an

Today, ride into Paradise! 

Sian Ka'an means "Where the Sky is Born." This is a tropical wetland paradise that is a delight for the senses, with empty stretches of beach, lush vegetation, lagoons, and mangrove forests. 

Cycle an empty, palm-lined road and expect inspiring landscapes of sea and sky as we explore the incredible lagoon and mangrove ecosystem by boat. Home to an endless amount of wildlife, this region is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its ecological importance. You will enjoy every moment of this adventure. 

Take a boat ride on the lagoons, relax and swim at a secluded beach. Ffinish with a refreshing swim in an open cenote -- pure bliss after a day of biking and exploring.
